    How long can you span?

...just curious: What is the longest span between anchor points that you've successfully hung your hammock? How far up the tree did you have to attach your huggers?

    any pics?

I have done 30ish feet once... Just to prove I could... Pushes my straps up the tree with a stick on one side... Other side I was on a slope so it didn't go as high...

My only issue was tarp ridgeline... Even with 35' of line I was out of line with running around the tree... So I made abig loop out of paracord around the tree and then ran my ZingIt through the big loop and back to the tarp like normal...

35 feet is my longest, tied to a 5m circumference pine.

I only managed it easily because the hammock lay in a 4 ft deep hollow. Without that hollow, I'd have been pushing the straps up the tree with sticks.

25 feet is about the longest I can do without my levitating boots or trained squirrels.

32 feet with my SLS, using 1/8" Amsteel. The straps were only 6'-8" up the tree, which is the highest that I can comfortably work.

But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed. (Luke 5:16 NIV)

He said to them, “But now let the one who has a moneybag take it, and likewise a knapsack. And let the one who has no sword sell his cloak and buy one." (Luke 22:36 ESV)

While people are saying, “There is peace and security,” then sudden destruction will come upon them as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. (1 Thessalonians 5:3 ESV)

Here's Dejoha's niffy calculator that can tell you how high up you need to hang from the trees for a given span and hang angle.

i went to the park this past weekend to play with my hammock. i set up about 30 feet apart, not totally sure, i'm a bad judge of length. i had 15' tree straps with ring buckles and a few feet to spare on both. i had the tension pretty tight. the structural ridge line really helped here. i played around with a whoopie to a toggle in the tree strap and it got me thinking that i could hang further. 15' tree straps toggled to 6' whoopies to 11' hammock. i could do roughly 40 or 45 feet, now i gotta try that next weekend. i'd have a hell of a time hanging my tarp like that.

Don't know the actual distance for sure, but I maxed-out my suspension on both sides one time on the AT. It was the only 'good' spot in sight and I didn't want to leave the group I was traveling with at the time. I had just enough of a tail on my webbing to make the backup knot on both sides and the ridgeline on my ElDorado was set at 101", with 11' of webbing on each side. The trees were fairly small in diameter, so take your best guess on the actual span. I had to use my poles to push the webbing up the trees and had serious drop when I got in the hammock. One of my least comfortable nights in a hammock, actually.

I've never 'settled' for a hang site since. Give me 15' between the trees and I'm a happy Cannibal.
