    Grayson Highland Backpacking Trip [video]

Hey guys and girls! It's been a little while since I have been here, I have been in the process of moving, relocating, and starting down a new trail in my life adventure.

I put together some footage of a trip my brother, a buddy, my dog, and I took on February 2 and 3 to the Grayson Highlands in Virginia. We just did one over nighter and 2 days of hiking. Temps got into the teens/20s at night and put down about 8 inches of fresh powder by morning. We got off trail and did some bush whacking to finish up the excursion. It was good to get out in the cold and see what the limits of my sleep system are.

I used a DIY TQ that my brother made and a hammock gear under quilt (20F) along with my sleeping clothing (down jacket, baselayers, fleece pants, fleece hood...) and slept great. Not to mention we slept 2 hammocks, a bivy, and a dog inside a shelter - so that was nice to sleep out of the elements.

Here's the link to some of the footage - hope you enjoy! Please feel free to share and "thumbs up" the video.

Nice job on the video. I cringed when I saw you guys going through that stream. What kind of camera did you shoot it on? I'm betting it was a go-pro. Looking forward to getting out on the trail soon!

Oh yeah those streams caused our shoes to be bricks in the morning. Granted my shoes were water proof, so my feet stayed dry the entire time. My brothers shoes though.... And yes it was a gopro. Definitely nice in wet situations like that.

Great video. Liked the music, too. Dog looked happy to be out with you guys. You didn't look seriously lost; must have had a pretty god idea of where you were going. Can you reconstruct your route now that you're home safely? Starting/ending points (a loop?), which trails, which shelter?

At Mt. Rogers winter hang, Pat and Mike told me about crossing streams (in Alaska, I think) by taking off boots and wearing heaviest pair of socks to wade the stream, then putting on dry socks and boots on the other side.

No we weren't lost, just off trail. We knew if we kept a south heading that we would hit 58 and be able to get back onto the Appalachian Trail.

My brother has the map - but I know we started on the AT and hiked to the Feather Ridge Trail (I think). We took that to the Iron Mountain Trail and stayed at the shelter on the IMT. I can't remember the shelter name but it was close to FS90. We hiked out on FS90 until it dead ended to the south west and bush whacked to 58. We hiked west on 58 and got back onto the AT and followed the VA creeper trail back to the car.

Well that was right enjoyable to watch from the warmth of my office! Ha! Looks like a lot of fun, especially when you're young and immortal! Fine looking beast too! Thanks for sharing that!

Thank you Mountnman - My brother showed me that song. Sam Bush and David Grisman know how to produce some music.

Haha thank you - I'm pretty partial to that yellow monster as well.
