    Question with sewing

What sort of thread do you use when sewing your hammocks together? And what about when sewing zippers on? Is there a special nylon string? Thanks in advance for your help.

Synthetic, most folk use gutermann thread, because it is easily available. Make sure it is either polyester or nylon and your golden

I do not recommend nylon thread for home machines as it tends to stretch and mess up the tension adjustments. Any high quality 100% polyester thread is a good choice. Avoid cheap thread and buy from a sewing center, not a big box store.

Take a look at places like DIYGearSupply.com that tend to cater to the HF crowd. Might give you some answers.

The thing to realize about "gutterman" thread is that they make dozens of types of thread. Scott at DIY stocks the "right stuff" for use in gear making. Many other stores, like JoAnns and the sort stock gutterman as well in other types. Just grabbing a roll off the shelf does not make it what you want just based on brand. That would be like saying any beer will due if it says it's beer on the bottle....they come in different flavors...Your looking for a specific micro brew in the Bud lite section of the store.

I use 40wt polyester machine embroidery thread for my DIY gear. It is fairly inexpensive and easy to find matching colors. Any sewing center should have some. Robinson Anton, Pacesetter and Hemmingworth I have used with no problems. I imagine 40 wt polyester by Gutterman would work great. Superior Threads has a good line of 40wt Polyester as well.

I consider JoAnn's a big box store. To throw some gas on the fire... for the typical home gear maker I think there is too much emphasis on thread. The cheap $1 bin spools are garbage and terrible to work with. But to be perfectly honest... I've had decent luck with almost anything as long as it is fresh and stored properly. All thread has a shelf life.

I don't like playing the brand game exactly for the reason pgibson laid out. All manufacturers produce multiple lines for various applications. I say buy from a sewing center, or from one of our cottage vendors. They know the market and what stitchers want in the products.

Great thread makes a better product but I find an awful lot of navel gazing on the subject.

Commercial production is a whole different thing. There you best know specifically what you want and know specifically why. But sewing for yourself.. use good stuff but don't waste your stitching time navel gazing.

By going with the pros, you can save yourself a lot of frustration and crappy results. My navel is still full of fuzz from my learning experiences with the subject. Sorry, no pix.
