    Dutchware & Amsteel

After trying the toggle, whoopie slings, UCR's, plus the original Hennessy Hammock Figure 8, I went with this.

Here is what I went with for now. Here's is the parts.

    6' Strap
    Dutch Clip
6' Amsteel (7/64) Locked Brummel on both ends
Dutch Whoopie Hook (Slides freely on 6' Amsteel)
6" Amsteel (7/64) Locked Brummel on both ends.
    6" Soft Shackle

Here's how I have it set up:

Tree Strap & Dutch Ti Clips. A Dutch Whoopie Hook (Slides freely) on a 6' Amsteel with 2 locked brummels (Eyes) on each end. One end is Larks head on to the loop of strap. On the 6' Amsteel I have a 6" piece of Amsteel with 2 locked brummels attached by a Klemheist Knot. (This knot holds tight, but is easy to move up and down the line to adjust) I use a Soft Shackle to connect the 2 eyes. It works faster than my UCR and the weight is the same, minus a few grams.

I set this low to start, marked the line and no movement. Moved it up until it was way over what I would hang in real world. Only then, I noticed less then 1/8 of movement, but it held. If anyone is interested, I'll pop some pics up later.

I should add, the only real con to this setup is the amount of splicing for both sides. 8 Locked Brummels, (On a few of them, you have to make it where you only have access to one end) and 2 soft shackles.

Oh boy, another option to try. Things change fast around here. Thanks for this, looks very interesting, and will afford me some amusement in the morning making it, although I think I have most of the pieces made up ahead. No matter, I will be trying this out, as it looks neat and clean and but for the kleimheist knot, not much to fuss with.

The Kleimheist knot works very well on Amsteel. A little pull, and I can move it up or down the line. Once it locks on, it doesn't move at all.

I also could have figured out a way to get rid of the Soft Shackle, but that would require more splicing and my mind couldn't come up with an idea. Hoping someone will jump in with a solution.

If I'm thinking about this correctly...

-splice the fixed eye in one end
-tie the Klemheist around a tube (I used an arrow shaft toggle)
-feed the free end through the Dutch Hook and then through the tube
-slide the tube out of the knot, off the end of the amsteel and snug up the Klemheist knot
-splice the second fixed eye using the "only one end available" method
    -larks head to strap

    Did I get it right?

I have to wrap my head around this in the morning when more cells are firing. I've been splicing all night & everything looks both right and wrong at this point in time.

    Problem

The Klemheist knot worked great on one side. However, as the line gets pulled, and the line become super slick, it won't hold. Back to something else. And to think, I was once happy just with the HH figure 8. I might give the single ring a whirl. It's about the only one I haven't tried.

Can you show pictures of it rigged to the hammock and tree strap? I just can't figure out what hooks to what. Does the whoopie hook attach to the hammock?

The Whoopie hook attaches to the hammock. If you look at this picture here at this link: http://www.flickr.com/photos/one_thi...1995/lightbox/

The hook is to the left and would be attached to the hammock. You'll also see the Klemheist knot to the right, which is attached to a soft shackle via an locked Brummel. (Fixed eye)

The Klemheist knot will work, however you have to have it longer than 6" for it to hold. More like 10". Adding all the extra cord doesn't make sense as I'm not saving any weight over the Whoopie Sling or the UCR in the end.
