I vote for Raccoon, Skunk, or Porcupine.

I was at Rausch Gap last year and had an animal do that to me twice.
Scared the daylights out of me. I had the tarp staked down low so I could not see what hit me. That never happened before.

It was racoon season last year and I woke up in Slickrock Rock Wilderness and there was a hunting dog laying next to me. It scared me pretty good. It turned out there were two of them, but one was really shy. They followed me around for two days. I never fed them and they never ate anything that I saw. Hunters get really mad if you feed their dogs - I respected that , but I really wanted to give them something.

I was doing my annual pre-hike hang on the back hill a couple of years ago, and a deer nosed the hammock. I know it was a deer because they often sleep on the hill and because I heard the telltale snort. I wasn't alarmed.

Porcupines are very inquisitive. I had several poke their heads around a tarp I had placed over a lean-to shelter during a rain storm.

My dad woke up once while camping to a strange glugging noise. It was a porcupine sitting in the end of his tarp shelter, staring at him from the foot of dad's sleeping bag.

I suppose the porcupine was telling dad to Quit Snoring!
