Looking at the pictures, it looks like the pole wants to be the same length as the height of the strap up the tree. Figuring that the middle of the bow wants to be shoulder height and the strap wants to be about shoulder height, I'd guess that you'd wrap the strap about 36 inches up the tree plus an extra 6 inches. Say 40 inches up the tree. And, correspondingly, have a 40-inch long pole. That's just a guess though. Make sense?

I noticed that the pole in your pic looks like it's just stuck in the ground, but the pole in the source site shows the pole butting up against the base of the tree. Were you able to use your seat with the pole not against the tree? I ask because if you don't need to go all the way back against the tree, it seems you could use a shorter pole.

Thanks for sharing this great idea!

I used a 36" pole and it was a bit unstable but I bet it would be fine if the pocket was deeper and the seat was wider, still havent done that. I have tried it with a short pole not against the tree but that was unstable, having it wedged up to the tree also keeps that pole from just slipping out on you.

So I had an idea for the pole. Don't have any pics yet, will post when I get some. I got Sch 40 PVC in 1/2", 3/4", and 1". Cut them to 4' lengths, will cut to exact length when I get a chance to use it and see exactly how long I need. Then I cut each the 1/2 and 3/4 length wise, down 1 side, on my tablesaw with blade only up about 1/4". They all fit together, tightly. Took a little "coercing". Then PVC caps on both sides, with the bottom one drilled out and a 5/16" galvanized bolt through hole in middle, with lock washers and nut. Used bench grinder to make a point on the end of the bolt. Now I have a nice smooth top to put into the fabric, a spike to hold into the ground, and a strong and not overly heavy pole to use. Can also be used as a hiking pole to get there. Since my interest is in a hunting seat, I will also paint it camo later.

my take on a single tree camp chair

I used parts from a set of crutches for the adjustable pole, made a small gathered end hammock. Cut a 4 inch slot in the middle of the 4" triple sewn hem. Made a pouch for the pole out of 1.5 inch webbing with a sewn in loop for a 6" spreader bar made of PVC,gathered the material lashed it to the spreader bar. I also installed a aluminum tent stake in the end of the pole to keep pole from slipping out from under you. Supports my 280 lbs, real comfortable.
