    planning hike in Glacier national park

    Has anyone hiked through Glacier national park? My brother nad i are planning a hike starting at Lake mcdonald with stops along Snyder Lake, Sperry lake, Gunsight Lake, Reynolds, and Rising sun lake. He suggests bringing a tent but i loathe the idea of being in a tent again. Has anyone experience in western hiking conditions? Anything different than hiking say in the White mountains of nh which is my stomping ground.

    Hi Walker

    Glacier Nat'l Park is an International sister park to Waterton Lakes Nat'l Park to the north. I've spent a fair bit of time in Waterton and will be headed there for a 5 day trip in a couple days.

    I'm not familiar with the route you are planning but I know two things about Waterton:

    1. There will be wind, probably a LOT of wind;
    2. If there is snow in the mountains there is a possibility of avalanches - check conditions and recommendations before you go and learn ALL you can about avalanches!

    Although I have never hung in Waterton before, I have backpacked there in tarps and SUL shelters. If they can stand up to wind, I'm sure a hammock will work, but keep an eye out for overhead branches and widowmakers when selecting your anchor trees. Remember that changing weather can mean a change in wind direction. Check the forecasts and pay attention to wind direction and speed.

    Best Regards

    planning hike in Glacier national park

    Never hiked there but have friends who have. They reported an abundance of bears and recommended everyone have bear spray. They are from the East and said it was beautiful.

    I am also anticipating a trip to Glacier this summer. Will there be any problems with hanging my hammock? I am bringing a bug bivy but am hopping I don't have to resort to that.

    planning hike in Glacier national park

    I spent two weeks in Glacier last summer. Hung every night but two (motel room and cowboy camping on a meadow). I had to be creative at a few sights but had no problems. It's amazing country and well worth the trip. We saw tons of wildlife but the only somewhat dangerous encounters came from a bighorn and a bull moose.

    You need to get your permit process started right away to get the campsites you want. 50% are walkup but you have to get in line asap. Here is a nice chat site on Glacier that will teach you everything you need to know. Ask away on it as they have all the answers for you and its super helpful in planning. Plan on carrying bear spray and a bear can. Enjoy as Glacier is a special place.

    Get your p permits in as early as possible as they take them in the order received via mail. Enjoy Glacier.

    Interesting to see this thread pop-up again. I did hike w/Boy Scout group last June; meaning I was not in control of my own itinerary. We hiked from St. Mary and camped 2 nights at Red Eagle lake. Turns out the whole area had been burned by forest fire. Found the only suitable trees from which to hang were right on the shoreline of Red Eagle lake. Day 2 provided drenching rain which moved the shoreline about 15 feet higher, eliminating my only hammock site option. Had I not been with the Scouts, I could have found a suitable stealth site less than 1 mile farther down the trail.

    I had thought that My tarp would provide a suitable go-to ground option but, the rain was so robust and seems to flow uniformly down the mountain sides, I really needed something with a bathtub floor to sleep on the ground. I have since purchased a Tarptent product that I will carry in addition to my hammock should I ever be in a similar situation.
