    How Small Can You Go

    Received the following question....

How small can you compress your Jarbridge (3 Season) 3/4 UQ down to ?
I own 3 Jarbridge UQs, A 1 Season and 2 of the 3 Seasons ( got them during the sales Paul holds, thanks Paul ) Great UQ's and they get lots of use. I take them to group hangs in case someone wants to try one.

I was able to stuff a 3 Season into a 12 inch tall by 24” circumference flat bottom stuff sack and it was a very, very tight fit. With a compression bag you might be able to get a bit smaller.

Once in the bag it measured 8" across (and 12 inches high).

I tried a compression sack, to be honest I think it was more of a PITA than just using the stuff sack. Definitely felt heavier too.

I toss mine into the pack directly (well into the pack liner/contractor bag). It fills all the space evenly. In doing so, I eliminated the need and weight for a stuff sack.

Compression bags make very poor use of the space inside a backpack. Your backpack is a large compression bag. If you eliminate most of stuff sacks, you can actually fit more gear and the pack will ride better. Try it.

Personally, I never liked smashing my down items inside a small stuff sack. As others have said, my down bag goes inside my trash compactor bag without the need of stuff sacks.

Quilts go third i to the pack with no stuff sack. Less fighting on the trail.

My experience has been that when you compress these lofty quilts so much, the stuff bag becomes surprisingly rigid and doesn't conform very well to the contours of your pack.

I really like the compression bags to get items into the small confines of my kayak hull, but like a less compressed bag to fill the pack.

I will either use a stuff sack or just shove my Hammock gear in the backpack depending on how much I have to take for the trip.

Since I do all my camping off the back of motorcycles space is more important than weight. But if compressed down hard some times it more difficult to have a place it can be crammed. Packed in a stuff sack most times things can be used to fill open spots between other gear. The stuff sack also protects what is inside from wear of the vibration that will quickly wear holes or at least thin spots if pack next to hard surface items. When traveling on a dirt bike think paint shaker for 10-12 hours a day.

Re: How Small Can You Go

Would you mind letting us know how small the 1 season packs in comparison to the 3 season? I am thinking of grabbing one while the are on sale.

    Thanks!

1 seasons will go to about 1/2 the size of the 3's as we use insulation that is roughly half the thickness of the 3's....I say about as the fabric and other parts are still the same but the insulation is what makes up most of the structure of the quilt.
