FWIW, I camped out at Devil's Den State Park in Arkansas last night. Ranger came by to talk to us (since we showed up too late to register). Did not say a word about the hammock.

FYI Michigan State Park have been very open to hammocks, I'm not aware of ANY policy not allowing them or aware of ANY policy allowing them. Missy Lou and I are actually involved with REC101 Intro to Hammock Camping being offered through Michigan State Parks so I would say that's a BIG YES!!!!

Randy - So no use of wide webbing on trees? Nothing connected to the trees?

Iowa Department of Natural Resources Correct, it can not be connected to the trees. Also, hammock camping needs to take place in the campground in a designated camp site that you're registered for.

Randy - Mn, IL, Ne and MO - Allow connection to trees with certain rules. Is this something the IA DNR could please look at? It appears to me that this type of camping is growing rapidly and should be evaluated or at least have a pilot test program. Thanks for your consideration.
That stinks though none of the local rangers has ever said anything about our hanging. Good thing I have access to a large piece of private property that is smack dab between 2 parks with lots of trails and trout fishing. Went and scoped out some hanging places and talked with the owner and he was fine with it.

That or some stealth camping will be in order...

First off, I didn't read this whole thread. In the OP Rev said he didn't email the State of Alaska. I just wanted to say that I've hung there every summer for the last 5 years or so and have never had any problems with any state authorities.

I have to agree with you. I read through all of the camping type designations and hammocks would actually explicitly fit under the "primitive camp" site description:

"Primitive Camp - any camp using a shelter
carried to a site via bicycle, canoe, horse or on the
    back of a camping member."

I suppose you could call ahead to the specific place you intent to camp and try to make your case, but you'd still have to find and reserve a designated camp site that had trees on it.

    "Section 130.10 Location
Camping will be permitted only in established
campgrounds or designated areas. Camping is
    prohibited in any other area."

From what I recall, these are pretty much non-existant on DNR properties that are used for camping.

Currently we do not have a specific hammock policy. Use of hammocks on trees at campsites is subjective and we are unable to say across the board where hammocks can and can't be used. It depends on the individual parks and their campsites.

To be suitable, the trees would need to be within the campsite area and not away in the woods or too close to a neighboring campsite. There are so many variables regarding using trees. We assume most hammocks using straps are non-damaging to trees. Hooks screwed or nailed into trees is prohibited. Free standing hammocks are allowed at any campsite.

Chattahoochee Bend is one of our parks that has platform campsites with hammock hangers. Also, sites with hammock hangers are in development at Tugaloo State Park.

It is advised to call an individual park before making a reservation for any type campsite that the intent is to use a hammock. Thanks,

I live close to Chattahoochee Bend and took a look at the platform sites a couple of weeks ago. Give the DNR an 'A' for effort but a B- or a C for research and implementation. They've used 4x4 posts 15 feet apart...and the posts extend inly about 5 feet above the platform deck. Each post has an eye-bolt so it appears that they were thinking something like an ENO hook-up (even then they blew it). Swankfly talked to the on-site ranger who said the poles were for tieing out non-free standing tents. Fortunately, the platform sites are in out of the way locations and there are plenty of trees...

What the heck is a free-standing hammock?

That's only a somewhat facetious question.

I think they mean a hammock with a stand...
