I did a bit of checking into knots and how they affect ropes.

Knots Weaken Rope
They do! A great deal is written about which knots weaken a rope most. An angle, a kink, or a knot, stresses the fibers unevenly and weakens the rope. If this concerns you, you are using rope that's too thin. Although some knots in some ropes are claimed to only weaken a rope to about 80% of its rated strength, other knots weaken a rope to about 50%. It is therefore simpler, and certainly safer, to assume that even brand new rope will perform at no more than 50% of its rated breaking strength. And, if the rope is old, worn, or damaged by sunlight or chemicals - expect considerably less. For some useful test results visit Dave Richards' Knot Break Strength vs Rope Break Strength on the National Speleological Society Website.

that's good info drop.
in the quote you gave, they basically say if you're concerned about the knot weakening the rope, use bigger rope. but for people like us (trying to be efficient w/ our pack weight) we would rather get a little more technical about it.
so the article you gave a link to is really helpful w/ the comparison charts.
I too will something make and joy in it's making
That was a real interesting read. Thanks for posting.
From what they said there is a big variation in terms of type of rope used and more importantly how well the knot was tied. It goes to show that you need to tie a clean knot for best results.
It looked like the the butterfly knot only weakens around 70-80% with the bowline I was using weaking 63-67%.
So by changing knots I can gain a 10-20% load rating with the same rope. That was pretty much what I was looking for.
Yes it is not needed, but like slowhike said It is all about getting the maxium performance out of the equipment we are using.
Is that too much to ask? Girls with frikkin' lasers on their heads?

True, but stuff like that has never stopped me before.
I really am only going to use it to tie to the rings and form the loop in my larkshead knot. I haven't tried this yet, but I think I can do this by putting the ring on the rope and tieing it so that it is in the loop. Should work. If not I'll stick with what I am using.
