Scout trip on AT in PA

My scout troop took a beginner backpacking trip on the AT starting at the famous 501 shelter (had a nice chat with the outgoing caretaker Bob) and staying the night at Hertlein campsite and continuing out to the parking lot on 183 the next morning.

This trip was the first hammock experience for two of our older scouts (my son and our next door neighbor). When I asked how he slept one said with a big smile "it was the best sleep I've had camping warm or cold" and he is not going back to being a ground dweller. Temps ranged from a high of 56 down to 34 at night with a steady breeze all night. All hammockers were warm while 2 of the ground dwellers complained of the cold chill and rocks.

    My setup

Most of the troop went out to a nearby boulder field and I stayed back to be with the boys hanging the bear bag and watch the camp and finish my coffee

    doogie,

    Good to see new hangers.

Loved that they sold minutes in the hammocks for food to other scouts.

Hiked thru that section of the AT with Rain Man last week.

Great to see - hoping to get my troop out in hammocks this year as well.

Would like to hear how out Scoutmasters have handles this with not getting CBS since the scouts (and myself) can't afford UQs. Thought about PLUQs, or using their blue walmart closed cell pads.

    Thanks again,
    Scoutmaster

Coooooooooooooooooooooool. Selling time in a hammock for food. A scout is Thrifty me likes. Hammocks are slowly catching on in my troop. Boy I wish I still lived near the AT

I had purchased around 600 of the old military sleeping pads from WWW.govliqudation.com. when a boy comes to the troop I end up giving them one of the pads. They work great in a hammock. When it gets colder than my jcp diy under quilt can handle I use the military pad keeps me nice and toasty.
