Does anyone know the science behind why it works? Curious.

I usually spray some lysol on my stuff and hang it up in the garage for a few days. Works well.

Drink the vodka.... Enjoy the smell...
We would be one step closer to world peace, if everyone slept in a hammock..

I was kind of freaked out after my first campout with my hammock and TQ/UQ too, but someone on the forum suggested airing them out. Now I always just hang it outside in the sunshine and fresh air...It just goes away on its own after a day or so. Works with my Dangerbird and my underquilts.

I wouldn't take the smell out! Besides, woodsmoke smell is natural in the forest - animals are used to smelling the smoke from burned wood. I think that vodka, Fabreeze, Lysol, and other artificial smells might actually attract the curious!

Amen! Embrace it...don't try to mask it. Many people complain about the smell of soot after using their woodburning stoves. I love it! A whiff of that conjures up good times had on the trail more than anything else.

    Lots of Good Ideas

Thanks for the good ideas! I will start with the easiest, just hang the rig in the back yard and let the Texas sun and wind have a go at it. If that does not reduce the smell enough, I'll go with the Woolite for the hammock and a spray with the hose for the tarp.

I have to say I love this equipment, I was warm and toasty while the other "hanger" in our party experienced some serious cold in his rig. I'm now a bigger Warbonnet fan than before.

Again thanks for all the info, I'm about as green as you can get and its nice to have a place to get some help.

    I survived the climb!

The sun can help with some of the odor.
