    Tarp sizing??

Hello Hammock forms!! Newbie hear! I got an ENO double nest after reading the forms on here. My next step is getting a tarp. I'm not interested in DIY(I respect those who do, I have no such talent), Is the ENO Dry Fly all that bad? I'm also looking at OES Mactarps. My big question is what size? I want rain protection but don't won't a circus tent either. Is the micro big enough? Is the ultra too big? Is it worth the extra $ over the ENO tarp? Thanks guys and girls!! The advice I've read on this site has already helped me some.

Wow the doublenests seem to be getting popular the last few weeks. And size really depends on what weather you are expecting to take it into.

NC mountains, I see alot of rain. I will stay away from winter camping for now in the mountains at least. So 3 season use I guess would be the best estimate. Eno specs my hammock at 9"10 long, so these 10ft tarps seem awful short to me. Is the sag that great that they will work. What size would be best?

A 10ft tarp is indeed adequate for an ENO. With a good pitch, it will keep you dry.

That being said, the extra coverage of a longer ridgeline is nice. There are a variety of tarps available in both 11ft and 12ft ridgeline lengths, and they give more protection from mist in a hard windblown rain.

It seems OES tarps are the favorite around here. Cool, but what makes them better than the ENO tarps?

OK, so 10ft long is good, what about width, I forgot to ask that earlier, I know I'm a rookie

    Shape, weight, and construction.

shape - The ENO tarps have overly pronounced cat-cuts on them, and that minimizes the coverage in some instances.
weight- The non-sil ENO tarps are heavy in comparison to the Sil of the MacCats. ENO now has a sil-tarp, but it has a very short ridgeline.
construction - Brian's construction methods are above reproach. They are built to stand up to a LOT of use.

That's not to say that you couldn't get and be happy with an ENO tarp. But when you do a direct comparison, the OES tarps are better, although pricier. That price difference is too much for some to justify. YMMV

yes, the length of the rl is usually quite a bit shorter than the hammock fabric, for instance my hammocks are almost 10' when finished and the rl is only 8'5". most don't like the dry fly, since it's heavier material, you can get alot more coverage for similar weight. sil nylon tarps aren't very heavy, it's worth having a little more coverage than necessary, at least that seems to be the trend and that's how i feel. if you're in bad weather (which nc mts are famous for) you'll be glad to have a few extra oz of tarp.

    Hated it!

I started out with an ENO DryFly and just stopped my girlfriend Dancer from getting one. There are plenty of better designed, lighter, better made tarps out there. Save yourself a lot of fristration by skipping the DryFly.
