+1 on this one. What I found is the strap will hold itself in, or you can drill a hole and stitch it. This not only secures them from being lost, but keeps the free end of the tree strap up out of the way.
I [personally] don't leave them in the spike hitch only because I wrap my straps around my hammock's stuff sack (compresses it more) and they create big snaggy protrusions that way...
On my smaller rig, i use 3/16" aluminum cleaning rod for toggles; I hammered the end flat, drilled a hole, and stiched the end of the strap around it (like a shoe lace tip, again.)
