The recommended starting point is actually about 10% of their body weight. We tend to try and keep the younger ones to absolutely no more than 25% of their body weight.

Someone linked to a post about backpacking with kids, some good info in there. My son weighs about 60 pounds, so I try to have him carry no more than 15 pounds, closer to 10 pounds if we can. He carries: sleeping bag, hammock, tarp, mini bocce ball set (which is AWESOME), camping pillow, survival kit, cook kit, water, and a few small things like headlamp, granola bar, etc...

Goodman Creek Trail! Close to town, great hike. You can take it all the way up to Eagle's Ridge (or Rest maybe?), or split and go to Hardesty Mountain.

WOW, what a wonderful place to be. Too cool to have little one want more. My 3 are waiting for their kits to go as well.
    Great pics as well.
Enjoy and have fun with your family, before they have fun without you

Great pictures and a beautiful area to go in. I just came back from a trip myself with my little guy. Post my video up under trip reports. If you haven't check out the thread mentioned above.

Looks like he (and you) had a really great time. I am just getting back into backpacking and my oldest son is now 6. Looking forward to getting him out into the woods this summer.
