    Grayson Highlands hammock/hike

Due to job requirements, a hoped-for May/June hike was put on the back burner. Situation being what it has become, Duffy wants to hike and hang Grayson Highlands section of the AT, southbound into Damascus, in August or September. Any thoughts, suggestions, ideas welcome, as far as which weekend would be best...what will the bugs be like, how is the weather?

I've been to Damascus for an overnight, but not out on the trail, and don't even know what to ask! I just know we gotta get outta this city ONCE this summer!

Park in Grayson highlands st park, across from the group campground (hikers parking lot), hike abandoned gravel road to AT, go Left. in about 3 to 5 days you will be in Damascus. There is NO bad hiking along that route so take your time & enjoy!!!!

Is the weather good for hiking in Aug/Sep? We've only been to Damascus in the spring.

Latest I've been there is Early July, so can't say for sure. But I suspect that year round the weather is,,,, let's call it "Changeable!" So at least be prepared for rain & possibly high winds & have sunscreen & bug dope along.
Bear in mind that I"m usually there in January when the wind slows down to 40 MPH sometimes,,, so,,,,

Also, I hike year round, don't figure there is any such thing as "Bad hiking weather" but that's just me.

August will be low on water in a lot of spots unless it's been a rainy summer (at least until you get down to the rivers). If you follow Doctari's advice you'll have a great hike, we just walked that way back into Damascus for Trail Days last month. September would be a fantastic month to walk, as I have seen snow around Mt. Rodgers in Oct before. It truly is a changeable part of the world weather-wise.

Hiking & Hanging is therapy, and much cheaper than medication in the long run. Carry on.

Slowly but surely, this little trip is taking shape for the last week of August and first week of September.

Not taking my "3rd Annual Florida Hang Memorial +30F down top quilt" but opting instead for the RayWay top quilt Duffy made for me a few years ago. Lighter weight, less bulky. Will keep my big ol down for the Hang in January!

    Mighty Mouse,

I think the Grayson Highlands Annual Hang is in September. It's a wonderful hang and in conjunction with the Wild Pony Sale. The trees might just be starting to turn which is a glorious site and you could make Duffy buy you a pony.

Great bunch of folks for you and Duffy to meet too!

Well, shoot, Gumbo, life being what it is, we're leaving here the 17th and will hike the last 2 weeks of August. Durnit! Still, gonna be a good time - Duffy approves of everything I've done in the dehydrator, he's in Atlanta on business and has been eating hiker supper since Sunday!
