I found some poncho liner scraps at my local Foam and Fabric store. I took the smallest, scrappiest one and made this UQ. Used it last week and it was super, just enough for the warmer weather. I am probably overestimating saying it is a $2 UQ!

Awesome, all this DIY posts and stuff are making me really really want to buy a sewing machine. I'm pretty crafty and think I could make something decent enough for personal use. I'm in need of a UQ three season for my Hammock Bliss No-see-Um Hammock that is being shipped. I'm impressed you were able to make
the UQ with just a cheaper scrap fabric. I'm thinking of using an older sleeping bag I have and altering it. I have a question for you what sewing machine do you use or suggest for me on a budget?

Darkbyrd, I have three more pieces like it. As I said, I started with the smallest, scrappiest one first, so I can make 3 more. The fabric store always seems to have these scraps, although these 4 pieces were a little bigger and didn't have any flaws or seams in the middle of them. If we get the kids together to hike again, I'll give you one.
I use a $30 Kenmore sewing machine from a garage sale. I don't know anything about sewing machines! I got it years ago and took it down to Sears to ask how to thread it! I managed to find an old manual for it on the internet. It's been a challenge learning about different stitch lengths and tensions, but SO WORTHWHILE! I just made tree straps for the first time week before last. I now have a 100% DIY hammock setup. (Well, not the tarp, it is OES)
I'm impressed Michelle. I wish I had skills! I've got the machine and I've broken more needles than I've completed projects.
