In the grand scheme of things, there isn't one

The OP offered up what he's doing, and asked for opinions as to what others think or prefer. So as is want to happen, discussion has ensued about the merits of using a simple strap system as opposed to using something more complicated (albeit lighter) like whoopie slings.

It's the hammockforums equivalent of discussing which sports team you like better. There's no right or wrong answer, just opinion based on personal experience and preference.

    Cheers!

    That sums it up perfectly!
Keep it simple. The more crap you have and the more complicated it is, the more likely it is to break. Get back to basics man!

Went out on my very first hang this weekend. The straps were not too bad but I DEFINATELY see the advantages of the adjustability of whoopie slings. I will be ordering some today. I will post a hang report later today.

I thought you would see the light. My persuasive skills are amazing, no?

I've yet to play with cinch buckles or a strap suspension. However, my first hammock was a Hennessy Expedition with the rope suspension and I immediately came to hate how hard it was to adjust. Retying that Figure 8 sold me on whoopie slings in a heartbeat.

A ring-and-strap is easier than whoopies, but bulkier and (slightly) heavier. It's the bulk that killed me, not the weight. I highly recommend it for folks just getting into this, as it requires all of one knot that most folks already know and won't cause catastrophic failure if the correct use of that knot is forgotten the way hanging on the toggle can with whoopies. (Wow, run-on sentence for the win. Sorry 'bout that.)

    Anyway, that's my opinion.

Being able to hang with the trees closer together is a big plus for me, handy many times already..Nothing to lose is a big plus as well..... Who has actually weighed the difference? using the same length straps vrs. whoopie? Seems unfair to compare 6ft. whoopies to 15ft. straps..
We would be one step closer to world peace, if everyone slept in a hammock..
