Testing some material for bug netting.

Here in Texas it gets miserable during the hot months. With temps never getting below 80 even at night, any bit of wind helps. Noseeum seems to do a good job of blocking it all, so I've been doing some testing with some other materials.

I've made a few bug nets out of toule, and they do a good job at keeping the bugs out and letting some wind in. The downside is that they are a bit fragile, so you have to handle them with kid gloves.

The other day while I was at hobby lobby picking up some more toule, I stumble across what they had labled as "netting". The holes are huge, but I figured I'd give it a go. (At the Bridgeport hang last year I saw OldGringo using some pieces of ribbon that had been soaked in permethrin tied to his ridgeline as a "deterent". That made me thing that this stuff could work?) I sewed up a but net and sprayed it down real good with permethrin. I first tested it at the ButtBake about a month ago, and have spent about 15 nights in it since. So far, I have no bites and the wind moves through it like its not even there. Here's a pic of what this stuff looks like.

The guys at the hang were making fun of me, calling it a bird net I'll still carry the buginator in my pack (just in case) for a few more trips, but this seems to work very well. I'll keep you posted.

    How tough/durable is it?

The skeeters here in Jersey are as big as birds, so it just might work.
I need something with more airflow.

I'd say it's a bit more durable than toule, but not much. It is good for airflow though.

So now the question that comes to my mind... Was the permethrine soaking what's kept the bugs at bay or was the hole size sufficient for the task?

It was most definatly the permethrin. The holes are way too big.

I saw that at the Butt Bake (and didn't make fun of it). I was thinking that a Hug made of that material might be better as it does not come in contact with the ground and there's less handling of it getting in and out. It might not solve the fragility situation completely, but it might reduce the possibility of damage.

No bites and air -- sounds perfect to me!

But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed. (Luke 5:16 NIV)

He said to them, “But now let the one who has a moneybag take it, and likewise a knapsack. And let the one who has no sword sell his cloak and buy one." (Luke 22:36 ESV)

While people are saying, “There is peace and security,” then sudden destruction will come upon them as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. (1 Thessalonians 5:3 ESV)
