Question New Suggestion for a Changing HF

    Hello Everyone,

As some things have changed with HammockForums, there
are some that are worried about the future of this forum.
I for one, do not worry ...... I don't think that we are going
to lose the great members that we have.

That being said, I think that we have a chance to make some
changes, For the Good of Hammock Forums. This is our time
to try out some new things, and pull in new members.

Before I get to my suggestion, please understand that is all
that this thread is.... just a suggestion. Please do not get upset
at me, or suggest that I leave the forum. I am just putting out
my opinion of how we can make this place better.

    --------------------------------------------------------

I think that there are two distinct things that we can do, to
get our information and media out to more people.

We need to release Podcasts and Ebooks.

Podcasts - there is a whole sector of internet users who only
view podcasts. We have zero exposure to these individuals.
I believe that it would be great to cultivate a Best of Week HF
Podcast, with some of the best articles, videos and discussions
that went on each week. It would be pretty simple to have a
thread dedicated to this, and members can suggest what topic
or video should be added in the weeks podcast. It would be
very easy to stream these on Winamp also.

Ebooks - We have a TON of information gathered on the site.
With the ability to release free ebooks for thousands to download,
why have we not compiled highly informative books? We can make
a definitive hammock book, a great DIY book, an informative book
about trail cooking and stoves, and several other books. I do not
think that this would be difficult to put together either. I personally
think that the best marketing would be free ebooks, but if we
wanted to charge for some of the more detailed information, we
could make easy money with that. The money could be used to
purchase "giveaways" to fund contests and other cool things for members.
It could even be used for HF swag. The charge and distribution would
have to be done with Attroll's blessing, but he might be amiable to
this, as it would not cost him anything, and could increase membership
    numbers.

What do yall think? Is it too much of a headache to put these things
together? I personally don't think it would be difficult, but is always
    great to hear other viewpoints.

FWIW: I love both ideas! I'm sure Gumbo and I would patronize both.
I also agree that this is as good a time as any to try new things and float out new ideas.
Again FWIW: My personal concern is about how well HF will continue to maintain the delicate balance of inviting inputs and ideas with not allowing HF to become a soapbox for espousing inflammatory opinions. I place a very high value on the amiable, family-friendly environment that our x-mods maintained. I wish our new mods much luck and success in this endeavor. They have our full support!

I personally think that a Wiki would be much more useful and easier to pull off than podcasts and ebooks (I like both of those but they both take a level of commitment that will be tough to find on a regular basis).

We have mountains of information on this forum and lots of extremely knowledgeable people that could be put into place and maintained in a Wiki very nicely. Then, instead of needing a podcast, you can have a topic that describes how to do something along with pictures, links to forum posts, and links to web pages and Youtube videos. All of that information could be made much more accessible and maintained by the larger group without a time commitment for anyone (except maybe mods to patrol people that screw up the information).

The current problem, in my opinion, is that we have these mountains of information but it isn't readily accessible to people without doing a Google search and a lot of reading lots of different posts. If it was in a wiki then new people could go there to learn things first and then ask questions if something isn't clear.

    That's my $0.02

    Dave

P.S. Now actually might not be the best time to try big changes like this since the new mods are busy learning their new craft... but it's good to discuss

Dave, that is a great addition to my idea.

I have to agree with you that podcasts and ebooks would be work,
but we can get some of our cottage vendors in on it. This would be
great advertising for them, along with our forum. I also think that a
Wiki would provide valuable information, but it would take a great
deal of effort to decide what is put into the wiki.

Someone would need to comb through all of the relevant threads and
determine which make it and which doesn't... tough job. If we do a
podcast, we can include current discussions and threads from the week.
I don't think that it would be too difficult to put together an hour
worth of articles and videos from each week at HF. A little DIY,
some suspension talks, a dash of Shug, and a healthy dose of fire.

This suggestion is to get the community together and focused on
growing our member base and getting the information out to others.
If we do not want to undertake this as a group, then an individual
can create a "Week in HF" podcast themselves. I would gladly
    do this.

Ah, but you are proving my point and showing the value of a Wiki... distributed work. With a Wiki anyone/everyone can do as little or as much as they want. You don't have a single person or even a small group of people responsible. If you have someone that has a lot of knowledge on a topic (or is willing to dig it up) then they can put up a little bit of information in the Wiki and then call it quits. You don't need to decide what needs to be included and what not or how it should be laid out... let the community do it over time at their own pace. Again, the mods would have to give the boot to people that sabotage the pages so that is the downside to a Wiki. But distributed content creation (a wiki) is easier for a disparate group like ours to pull off than something that needs a leader/guide (for podcasts and ebooks). I would guess that one of the easiest ways to screen the content providers is limiting who could edit wiki topics... maybe only allow donating members to create/edit/change content.

I say go for it... start doing your hammock podcast. You don't need community support to get it going. If you are willing to put in the time and effort to do it right then it will become very popular quickly. I know that I would love to subscribe to your podcast

Why change? We already grow weekly, and with certain growth also comes problems. Which we've already seen over the past year. Personally, just "pulling members" isn't something I want to see or do. With all that has happened, lets just rebuild trust, reconciliation, and work with what and who is currently here and those currently joining. There is a time and place for everything, and podcast and all the other hoopla isn't needed at this point.

This isn't about change just because we lost moderators.
This is about change for the better because we can.
This isn't "just about pulling members"
This is about growing our member base that is dedicated
    and passionate about hammocks

Just because we are undergoing some management change,
does not mean that we should stagnate the forum and resist
adding features that would make it better.

I personally would love a podcast where I could spend an hour
and see some of the best topics and videos that I might have
missed if I was on vacation or something. We must also realize
that not every member is going to have hours to pour through
all of the current posts. If we give them a quick synapsis of
new and cool happenings, we could help people.

I personally do not need to just rebuild trust and reconciliation.
I am already past the "sky is falling" because all mods left idea.
I am (and always have been) of the how can we improve idea.

It just depends what the moderators or members are willing to do.
As I suggested before, this can be a fun venture with the community,
or it can just be a private thing that someone does. I think that
it would be better as a community effort. Regardless, it will happen.

I didn't read the whole thread (sorry...I'm notoriously lazy and I'm in the middle of vacuuming my house so my attention is split) but just the gist seems to be that a HammockForums podcast would be a good thing, yes?

Why not do one, Trambo? Of course, leave HammockForums out of it (since you're not a representative of the HammockForums corporate entity), but do a "Hammock Hanging with Trambo" podcast or something similar with a focus on the topics that are what you believe to be the topics of the day in respect to current events on the forums...then post a thread to let people know it's out there.

Sorry if I'm way off base...now back to my regularly scheduled chores.
I used to be a somebody, now I just camp.
