Sure! I believe you can add to it. If you have any problems, let me know! Thanks for volunteering!

Thanks for all legwork to make this happen.

I am a Leave No Trace Master Educator and will be training Scouts the prior weekend, so I'll be in that "be friendly to the planet" mindset.

Would anyone be interested in an outdoor ethics awareness course? I can make it as short (30 min) or as long as requested. I have to order materials so I'll need a head count.

May I add a column to gauge interest in an LNT course to the spreadsheet?

    WV>Watoga State Park>Oct. 18-20>New 2013 Fall MAHHA!!!

@VegaMike, that sounds great. I haven't had a chance to do any LNT training with scouts yet so it would be a welcome bit of knowledge.

We have so many demos I've had to but VegaMike's Leave No Trace class on Friday at 4 PM. He said that was fine.

    Details on LNT class HERE.

    Full MAHHA Event Schedule HERE.

Everyone who has already registered and is interested should go back and mark yes on VegaMike's class so he can get a good count for ordering materials. Thanks for offering this, VegaMike!

Trails and Picnic Shelter at Watoga State Park MAHHA

See this story in this week's Pocahontas Times to get a feel for how Watoga fits into our forest community. When I saw the reference to trail damage from last year's derecho, I asked Assistant Park Superintendent Kelly Smith if we might do some trail maintenance, and her eyes lit up. I plan to set up camp Thursday morning, so Thursday would be my day to work on trails. I'll get some recommendations for trails to work on and do some scouting myself in September, when I'll also look at two 12 mile stretches of the Allegheny Trail that lead to the park, one from the north and one from the south. Using either approach there's another six miles of trail within the park to get to Riverside Campground. I'll be looking for camping possibilities a mile or two outside the park on each stretch of the ALT (Allegheny Trail).

Here's the Picnic Shelter we have reserved for Saturday, Oct. 19th. It's in a nicely protected hollow, so winds from the side won't be much of a problem. It is a bit smaller than pavilions we've used at PGF and Gathright, but there are 6 picnic tables outside, some of which could be brought into the shelter or under tarps. With luck that won't be necessary. October is generally pretty sunny around here. Incidentally, peak fall color is usually the first or second week of October, so the trees on the ridges may have lost their leaves already, but the mountains will be under a blanket of color at ground level. I'll post some photos of the campground and some of the trails next month when the leaves start to turn.

From the pictures, it looks like the pavilion has lights, which is good for the potluck and raffle since it gets darker earlier. Maybe there will be electric outlets? Thanks for the pictures, WV, it really looks great.

WV, please post more about the trail maintenance as we get closer to the date of the hang. Do you want to put it on the google spreadsheet as a reminder to others as well? I will put it on the schedule of events page as well. What a great idea to give back with volunteer work to one of the few parks to allow our event. Another thank you, WV.

    No more thanks - thanks!

Okay people. No more thank-yous necessary for me. Believe me, Dutch and Happy Camper and Pan are putting much more into this than I will. I'll be off the forum for much of the first part of October, and everybody will be saying, "So, what have you done for us lately?"

Okay, one more photo: these are the restrooms (flush-type, clean) next to the Pine Run Picnic Shelter.

Looking at the Allegheny Hiking Trail Website, the hiking guide is HERE.

Watoga State Park is mention in Section 3 on pages 5 and 6. If anyone is interested, I can PM topo/trail maps from the guide. Don't want to post due to copyright.
