    Huh, around here we call them burrs. Anyway, they aren't that uncommon, resulting typically from either a viral or fungal infection of the tree.

    The grain in these is absolutely beautiful. The randomness of the lines is intriguing. My wife is an artist, she does sculpture and really values this unique wood for bases for sculpture.
    Revolution is about the need to re-evolve political, economic and social justice and power back into the hands of the people, preferably through legislation and policies that make human sense. That's what revolution is about. Revolution is not about shootouts.

    I'm not sleeping with Sauron.
    The worst backpacking trip I ever went on was still pretty good.

    If the trees are no more than 4" in diameter, the branches are less likely to be dead, will gather less speed should they break, and will cause less damage to you if they fall on you.

    Yes, I know, you don't often have free choice. But, when you do, bigger likely isn't safer.

    I came across this one on a hike sometime this year. Looked like an old man with a long beard. I did a whole set of BW trees, they seem to get more scary in BW.

    In some mysterious way woods have never
    seemed to me to be static things.
    In physical terms, I move through them;
    yet in metaphysical ones,
    they seem to move through me. -
