    R-value/CLO-value

Is there a direct correlation between CLO and R-value? I am trying to compare synthetic insulation to ccf pads.
I am also wondering where Insultex falls into the mix?

They are essentially the same, they measure the same thing just in different ways.

google on "clo r-value" and you'll get a number of sites that give the conversion between the two...just a matter of units it seems...for example this calculator.

I just heard this on a podcast the other day.

R-value is a type of measurement that has it's roots in the construction industry. It's frequently applied (or I suppose some would say misapplied) to insulation that's not for that purpose.

Any material (air included) has a value of insulation, it's 'conduction coefficient', and the 'R-value' is this unit expressed in different units in order to eliminate an area term from the equation. All-in-all, it makes it easier to apply when shopping in Home Depot/Lowes .

Nono, you were right on the money - it removes the need to have to figure surface area into the equation and just deals with thickness of the insulation instead, which makes it much easier for everyday people as well as builders to plan it's use.

Thanks for the help. The calculator, especially, helped me with my comparison.
