Is it easier to use a 1/2 pad together with the yeti with a double layer BB or a single layer BB?
Is it easier to use a 1/2 pad together with the yeti with a double layer BB or a single layer BB?
I did that last night. It worked out ok. I have a double layer BB and put the pad in the sleeve. I trimmed a $5 Walmart pad down to go from the end of the Yeti to my feet. It stayed in place fine but I think I'm going to get a Gossamer Gear pad instead. The Walmart pad is thicker than I'd like.
I always use a pad for under my legs...depending on how low the temps go, I double over the pad. This is the winter version of the Yeti...in the spring/summer/fall here is the US, you could just put extra clothes or even your pack under your legs if your using the 3 season Yeti).
Personally, even though I have a double BB, I put the leg pad inside with me(not between the layers) for 2 reasons...
1. I like being able to move the pad around as I move my legs...easier to do inside with you
2. Since your legs have very little weight (compared to your shoulders/butt) I don't even feel the pad (like you do under your butt).
So to answer your question, if your body weight allows a single BB, do that. Your pad/Yeti combo works with a single layer.
Experiment with what feels good to you!

I like to keep weight and bulk to a minimum so the idea of a double layer is not that appealing unless it comes with some added perks. But since having the 1/2 pad under the leg inside the hammock is easier than having it in between the layers than I'll just go with a single layer.
The double layer is a nice option if you think you'll be exceeding the temps of your Yeti. There have been a few (very few) occasions that I have gotten cold to the point that I unfolded my pad and slipped it in the sleeve under my whole body instead of just my legs. I don't like sleeping directly on the pads, so the double layer is a nice thing for me.
All that said, my next long hike will be with a single layer, as I normally keep the pad inside the hammock under my legs. Course, it'll be a summer hike. Winter time, I go back to the double for those nasty nights.
Trust nobody!
