    direction of baffles

Can anyone who has used both advise me on the pros and cons concerning the direction of the quilted baffles? Hammock Gear, for example, has baffles that run the length of the quilt and Jacks 'R' Better has baffles that run across the width of the quilt. Are there any noticeable advantages of one style from the other?

Interested in this as well. My quilts are HG, and run the length of the quilt, and have no problems....RR

I'm also curious about people's thoughts on this. I have a JRB underquilt and I love it but at the recent hang I went to, I noticed most if not all other undrequilts had the baffles running lengthwise.

down tend to 'fall' all the way to the bottom of the uq with cross baffles, creating cold spots on the sides.

On quilts like JRB's, the down can shift to the bottom. Some like it because the can shift more down to a cold spot. Others run long ways, don't have that same issue. I just read something Paul from UGQ's wrote about his baffles. Hesaid something about making them smaller as well to keep the down in place, so it stays evenly placed throughout.

The difference is in how the quilt is differentiallcut. I know someone on here has a diagram showing a cross section of the baffles that will explain it better than I could. But either way, both designs have been tweaked to perform so feel safe with either choice.

This isn't an issue in a sleeping bag as the baffles often have 'blocks' at the side hem, and of course the zipper keeps the down from migrating on the other side.
Some bags are designed to allow down to be shaken from the bottom of the bag to the top (or away from the top in warm weather) - a supposed 'feature'.

BUT, sleeping bags aren't 'hung' into a semi-circular shape like an UQ.

Most UQs seem to me to be a bit 'underfilled' with down (to satisfy the lightweight crowd?) and if that is combined with cross-wise baffles, I think it's a recipe for a cool night.
