MA > Western Massachusetts Hang spots

    Hey folks,

I thought I'd start a western MA thread since we're clogging up the NEHHA winter planning thread with talk of good spots in MA. If nothing else, perhaps, Cosmic Camper and I will just give a shout out when and where we're hanging so some other HF people could join us.

We're going to hike around Lithia Springs reservoir this Saturday (10/19) afternoon to look for some other good sites. It's off of Lithia Springs Road in South Hadley MA if anyone wants to join us.

    Best,
    CountryRoads

Hey Raiff I can't spend the night this weekend but cosmic camper might be up for it. I have to work until 1 on Saturday so we'll head up after that and then I also have to work early Sunday morning. Perhaps next weekend though.

If we didn't have a scout function this weekend, I don't think you could tear Nighthauk away! Can't wait for an opportunity to check it out.

Ha ha. Poor Nighthauk. Perhaps next weekend. Cosmic camper knows a lot of good spots around here. I'll tell him to post some of them. It would be awesome to have a small western mass hang.

    Western Massachusetts Hang spots

I have several that are close to me as well. I am sure we could come up with something. I will be looking for a snow shoeing expedition this winter as well. So those that are interested keep an eye for spots.

Learn something new every day. I saw there was a Country Roads signed up for Fall MAHHA in WV and thought, "Gee, how can she be in two places at once." Apparently, there are two Country Roads, one with a space and one without, one going to Fall MAHHA and one rambling in Western MA this weekend. I'd ramble with you guys, but I'm trying to make it to the Mini-Fall MAHHA in Stokes State Forest, NJ!

So the hike around Lithia Springs reservoir was beautiful. There are a hand full of other good sites where you can hang right next to the water or pretty close. We found one where we actually hung the hammock over the water. Cosmic camper couldn't go due to work so I went with another friend. It took us about 2 hours to walk down to the reservoir and go all the way around it, but the hike around the entire reservoir would only take about an hour if you didn't stop and lollygag like we did. There were some other camp sites where people had obviously had fires. Saturday afternoon is probably not the best time to go if you want the place to yourself. Lot of hikers and fishers out there.

So it's off of Rt. 116. If you know where Atkins farms is, right at the intersection between Rt. 47 and Rt. 116, you take 116 south from there. Go about 3.5 miles and you'll see Gagne's store. Turn right there, then right on Lithia Springs Road and you are there. To get to the reservoir take the main gravel path until you see a broken down gate on your left, go through the gate and you'll find your way from there easily and I'm sure most of the trails lead down to the water but this will take you to that stellar spot where we've camped.

I'll post some more pics in a bit.
