I don't know specifically about the front sites; probably a little more sensitive to overuse. But, the ranger I spoke with said there were no rules against hammocks anywhere in the park....except the AT.

    FYI
I received this response from the Parks Service:
    Hello,

As long as you are using straps so that you don't cause any damage to the
trees, you can hang a hammock. But you may have difficulty finding two
suitable trees that don't have poison ivy growing on or around them, so you
may wish to have a backup plan.

This is for Frontcountry camping (campground) Maybe if we show how LNT and low impact we are, attitudes might change along the AT...we can wish

Ha ha, that cracked me up!
I'm one of those weirdos that can roll around in Poison Ivy naked and not develop a rash. Not a single rash on my AT hike and I know I walked thru and into several patches. As a result I don't often notice, or pay attention, to Poison Ivy. It may in fact be there.

you're lucky about the poison ivy, most people are very subseptable to getting those rashes. And then there's the people like my husband, who when the words are meerly spoken, he breaks out in a rash!!!

don't forget that there could be some huge diameter trees in the area you camp at.

There were a few of those to be sure! But, I didn't find a single primitive campground that I wouldn't have been able to easily hang. In fact, there is one particular site that I need to dig out the maps/guide/journal and find. It was a wonderful campground very near a waterfall with that perfect pitch for sleeping. Huge boulders all over the place and about 8 trees ideal for hanging a hammock from. Maybe 2 miles down from the AT on a blue and prior to Clingman's Dome by maybe a day or two.

Sorry for the digression, I'm feeling a little misty today.

The 1% being the section with white paint on the trees. Shame they decided to show the long hikers the worst part of the park. I'd love to explore that park more, the parts of it I saw off the AT were amazing.

there is the BMT section through the park that hikers can do instead of the AT. A lot nicer too.
