Thanks for all the help guys!!!
FYI: If you want to know what type a certain bear is, sneak up behind it and kick it. Then,
run like crazy and climb up a tree. If the bear climbs the tree and eats you, it's a black
bear. If the bear just pushes the tree over and eats you, it's a grizzly bear : )

Do not walk behind me, for I may not lead. Do not walk ahead of me, for I may not follow. Do not walk beside me, either, just leave me alone.

I would use hardboard with the soldering gun. It worked quite nicely.

Tempered hardboard is the cutting surface of choice. It's relatively inexpensive and will last a long time.

I hold the gun at ~45* angle and pull it to use one of the long edges to cut. Using the edge instead of the point makes it cut better and allows it to easily follow a straight edge.

If the items are less than 2 ft long I have a piece of heavy tempered plate glass I lay out to cut on.
Longer items I cut on the lay out table top, tempered hardboard. it does leave a mark, but not a burn, if you don't stay in one place long

I've found that many hot hot knives don't get hot enough for polyester webbing and have had some fail after cutting a couple of dozen pieces of webbing in one go.

Finally decided to stump up for one of these.

I really like the cutting foot that protects the surface below.

+1 for the soldering iron/metal straightedge method. I do it right on my workbench if it's skinny or on my metal-topped table saw if it's wider.

We have this knife from Sailrite and use if often on our boat canvas work (usually Sunbrella) as well as lighter backpacking applications. It's expensive, but keep your eye out and Sailrite runs specials up to 20% off.
