    No kidding, that's what really happened! I wouldn't say that hammock hanging is safer than ground dwelling wrt lightning, though. If you get hit, you get hit. Either way you'll probably get fried. I'm thinking I was just ridiculously lucky.

    I always figured that, being in a dry nylon hammock with no other path to ground except the trees, that I was more like the filament in an incandescent light bulb. I got lit up, but not toasted.

    Normally I would have had my aluminum crutches resting against the hammock for easy access, but they had fallen over earlier. I'm sure that I would have fried if they hadn't. Did I mention that I was really lucky?
