Is there a way to tell if your hammock is designed that way? Mine looks the same on both sides.

Some aren't designed that way. Self-assignment is the next option. You assign the head/foot end to distinguish and separate foot funk from your kisser.

as i read thru this thread, a line from one of JIMMY BUFFETT'S songs comes to mind

IT'S S' SIMPLE, IT PLUMB EVADED ME

my OLD L.L. BEAN tent has color coded tabs for the pole ends to stick into

COLEMAN tents used to have color coded pole ends

    the list goes on...

BTW: lotsa good ideas in this thread

My WBBB is easy to tell head from tails. My DIY doesn't matter but I have a ribbon tied to the head so I know which end to hang higher for the foot funk reasons. The WBBB also has a ribbon so when in stuff sack I'll know where to put head or tails.

I've always been a red=head kind of guy (and no I don't have red hair) but one of our most popular combos is blue=sky=head and green=grass=foot. But some go with the colors of their favorite college football team

On the various lashed end hammocks I've played with it does not matter.

On my Hennessys the slit seems to be a clue.

Now I gotta mark my tarp...

    YMMV
