Using a quick link instead of a carabiner

I am looking to attach my simple sling webbing to a tree, now I can just pass the webbing through the loop that is in it already but I have also seen people use carabiners instead (I hope I haven't lost you yet.....)

I was wondering if anyone has ever used a heavy duty quick link instead of the carabiner? and if not do you think it would work?

Reason I ask is that my local big box store has them on sale for $1.50 and if they are strong enough that saves my some money then buying a 6 buck carabiner that will only be used for help hang my webbing.

What do you guys think?

They will work provided you can get your hands on one rated to be strong enough. Your going to want one rated to at least 1000 pounds. Now the flip side is that they are pretty heavy compared to a modern climbing carabiner, won't be as fast as using a carabiner and in that regard I don't see the benefit. I used some for my son's first hammock set up when we were just getting started. The 2 of them weighted almost as much as his hammock and took so much longer to use than a regular carabiner that I quilt using them after 2 or 3 trips.

Personally here is my thinking.....Use a carabiner to save your self a few seconds....Use Dutch clips to save a few grams over the carabiner....don't use a carabiner or any other hard wear to save both the weight and $'s and just thread the straps around the tree and through themselves (this is my preferred method)

Most rock climbers rappel off of a single quick link. They will hold you no problem but steel is way heaver than an aluminum biner.

Make sure you close the quick link tightly. If not it can bend slightly depending on the size and be a bear to deal with.

I use a quick link on my inside hang, but I wouldn't put one in a pack.
