I was thinking of splicing the ends together on one of the shackles and using an Ashley.

Mike, I think a marlin splice and a marlinspike hitch are two different critters. One of the knot mavens will most likely set me straight, though.

Very nice, nacra! I'm late to this party, but just tried it in place of a toggle for my UCR to hammock junction and I like it. Now I have a good use for those leftover scraps of 7/64 AmSteel. And 'biner substitutes...

Sorry, but I'm having trouble visualizing this in use as a carabiner replacement. Any pictures?

The marlin splice is the locking part of the locked brummel splice. These rope biners... The adjustable loop is half of a marlin splice.

Mac set me straight on that, so props go to him.

I just made one using an Ashley stopper knot. I spliced the ends together to have a single strand for the knot. It is extremely hard to set the knot and it uses more cord than the diamond knot. I left the tail a little short, so I don't know if it will hold up under tension. I'll report back when I get the tests done.

Gotta take my daughter & family to a cruise ship ATM, but I'll post one when I get back if someone else doesn't do it in the meantime.
