Velcro for SS?

Knotty... I know now what you are talking about. You are correct... it does skew things around a bit. I figure as long as it works when I'm in it... I don;t much care how it lloks when I'm not. But then I don't iron any of my clothes either... so wrinkled appearance is not an issue for me.

I know exactly what you mean... It is weird looking. Not sure how to make the hammock look like a hammock with the SS on. One thought is a JRB Nest. But that's not an inexpensive resolution.

Well that's where my idea comes in. By untying the bungee in the hem of the SS entry it hangs naturally but it doesn't close properly. Inelegant solution is to put velcro on the SS entry to hold it closed. It just won't be automatic like with the hammock.

My thoughts on this are going to be half baked because it is not something that I find to be a compelling problem. However, given that.... I think I would be inclined to use the omni tape in such a way that there is only one closure to make. ie. the sides of entry slot of the super shelter are gripped to their respective side of the hammock entry. Then either the entry is gripped shut. That way there is still a single opening to fool with getting into and out of the hammock.

Alternately... get the zip modes and sew up the oipenings on both layers.

Odds are I'll get the zip mod but still velcro or omni the SS entry closed, so it can be returned to its original functionality if needed.

Yeah, that looks pretty typical. It is mostly a cosmetic issue.

I'd be leery of replacing the elastic with velcro. Tom H. is a pretty smart guy and generally looks at all the options before finalizing a design. I would guess that the elastic in the slit is necessary to keep the UC snug up against the bottom of the UP.

At temps close to freezing I add an Exped Multimat beneath the UP. It is fairly rigid and does make the UC slighly less "slitty"... I would think any somewheat rigid pad in there would improve the looks.

BTW, I am using the same pad in the Warbonnet BB and it helps in a similar fashion on that rig. Makes the hammock stay nicely spread.

2Q/ZQ zipper mod is definitely in my future.

But I guess my complaint is misunderstood. The good velcro seal in the hammock is not the problem. My issues is with how the SS makes the hammock bunch up.

Well, there is no doubt it(the HH) has a very different appearance with the SS in place, but this is something I never even thought about before. I guess as long as function is good, I'm not much concerned with the bunched up look, so I have just never thought about it. I guess adding Velcro to the UC and ditching the bungee might solve this problem. It would also give you a better seal for maybe improved wind resistance. However, it might change the function by not keeping the UC snugged close up against your pad and back. This might decrease warmth. OTOH, if you are stuffing down insulation under the pad, it might decrease loft loss caused by the UC tension, which might be an advantage. I wonder what the effect would be if you did not even connect the bungee cords(elastics) on the UC ends to the Prussick hooks?

Your strong Velcro is far different from anything I have experienced with my HH. I was always able to open mine quickly with a "weighted" foot on each side of the slit, and after very little use it began to open almost by itself. I gues you can be assured of keeping the bugs out at least!

Right you are. Once inside all is well.

My current thoughts are to get a 2Q/ZQ zipper mod and use it for entry/exit. Velcro the SS entry. Experiment with insulation that would make use of what function the SS already provides.
