It is hard to wear out a hammock. I still have most of my gear from my thru and still use it heavily. All my socks are long gone and the elastic has gone south on my pants and shorts. My shirt kind of shrunk or I grew and is now a 3/4 sleeve. And My sleeping shirt is still good to go another thru. My ULA pack is quite worn, but still very usable and has seen at least another 700 miles since 2003. My hydrogen bag looks like new except for a small hole I repaired in VA. I still even have parts of my z-rest. I did wear out 5 pairs of shoes, but the last one was good enough that I was able to train and run a marathon in them. My wife uses my hiking poles. I think all this stuff should be put in a museum.

I think tents take a beating more then hammocks.
2005 Reality Check's JRB Three Season Quilt Set went Springger to Katahdin with virtually no effect... We swapped him a new set so as to be able to evaluate the wear etc... Had him send it to us unwashed...After inspection we washed it......It hangs on the Shop museum wall now.... but could easily do a thru again.

I just completed a thru-hike using my Hennessy Explorer Ultralight, with the Hennessy undercover and underpad, all the way. I slept in it every night on the trail except for four nights in the Smokies, where you are required to sleep in the shelters, and when doing work-for-stay in the huts in the White Mtns.

and out of curiosity what would be the up-scale RC cola? Can't have moon pies without rc cola.

I remember I had a favorite pair of shoes as a kid. I never wanted to wear them because I would mess them up. Then one day I had a good reason to wear them, and they didn't fit.

Okay so the same may not be true for backpacking gear, but what's the point of owning it if you're not going to take it?
