Can Sil/waterproof any fabric?
There is a lot about making your own waterproof nylon using mineral spirits and silicone but has anyone used any other material for their tarps or gear? I figured polyester material would work the same, but what about the different types of cotton?

You'll probably have more problems with cotton because of how absorbent it is (weight gain will probably be a fair bit higher than synthetics), but I bet one could get a pretty decent DWR-grade coating with some sort of spray method.
Spinn, the stuff some use for tarps, is just sil-coated polyester fabric, so synthetics take it pretty well.
It's better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.
