    Permethrin treatments

I am a fan of treating clothing with permethrin s added protection against skeeters and ticks (especially). For instance, when canoe camping at Assateague Island I always treated my tent body and netting with permethrin to keep the ticks off of the doorway. Likewise, I treated my Original Bug Shirt to keep them at bay.

I was thinking of treating my HH Expedition body and netting with the spray (Sawyers) as well.

Does anyone else treat their hammocks with permethrin?

Having had Malaria and Encephalitis, I treat with permethrin. The amount is a full canister of Sawyer's Permethrin in a sealed garbage can overnight. Then I let it air out for a day or two. It is good for multiple washes, and I think it is plant/flower based, so it shouldn't cause too many side effects. Yes, it is probably too much of a dosage, but the encephalitis almost killed me, but the cancer I beat quite easily...

REI sells Sawyer's ... but you can find it in most outdoor supply stores ... or order it online. Instructions are on the product.

I spray my hammock and straps ... wet it really well and let it dry ... pretty much that simple. Do it once a year in the spring. Spraying the tree huggers or straps seems to work well to keep ant traffic off!

That's why it's important to remember that not treating is also a risk factor. Everyone has to decide for themselves but doing nothing due to chemical concerns doesn't make you safe by default.
