    VIDEO:Meet the General

This past weekend I took my son out for a beautiful Spring weekend hang. My Son "the General" came upon his nickname the last time we hiked as a family when he led the "troops" by doing a drill sergeant Hut left right left routine on the family. So that led to "The General" who we also call "a dictator without a country."

Anyway so we took off down the Appalachian trail southbound to the Tom Leonard Shelter in MA which for us was about a 2.5 mile trip. We stayed at a beautiful area where there was a lookout. The shelter was held by this couple that was there when we arrived, with their tent parked close to the shelter. Their body language and actions were telling us they really didn't want to be bothered. So we stayed to ourselves and just had a blast.

Everything went well until about dusk when for more people arrived carrying in two cases of beer and two small dogs. The general and I went to bed about 9:00 he fell asleep fast where as I had to have earphones playing white noise trying to drown out the group noise out. I fell asleep for a little bit and woke up to them still going at it through the night. at eleven they called more people up and they arrived sometime when I was asleep. At about three they were breaking wood for their fire. About 4 i had it and had to say something to them and they quieted down and kept the noise down. Didn't do much for my sleep cause I was pretty fired up.
With all that said the one person who didn't really get effected was the general. Thankfully he slept fairly soundly.

All and all though we had a great time and a very successful trip. Take a look at the video and i hope you enjoy it.

The little General has a big future in the wonderful world of hiking! I hope he gets to hammock hike all over the world. Thanks for the video! It's a great/important video for people with kids around the General's age.

I'm glad you enjoyed your trip in spite of the situation.
That's why I avoid easily accessible, established campgrounds. Two trees, way off trail, deep in the wilderness makes for some good sleep.

Really enjoyed your video this morning! Quite the little hiker ... enjoy these years as much as you can. They grow like weeds and soon it will be just grand memories!

Thanks for sharing your time with the General!

Thank you. I learned a lot on this trip about things to look for as well Aston make sure you have everything. We forgot a few things fortunately they were of minor importance.

We were a little disappointed but I though it was 2.5 miles in. There was a cutoff that was a little under a mile where people could park. Bummer. Oh we'll didn't ruin his weekend and that was what I was concerned with. Thanks again.

I hear you on the weeds part. I have also a 15 and 13 boys. They are almost as tall as I am. I went out with the 13 yo on his birthday in October. We are planning something similar again.
    Thanks for the comments.

Inspiring Video! About 2/3s of the way through, I was trying to figure out if I could plan a one-nighter with the boys this weekend.

The General is quite a trooper. Great job!
