VIDEO: Tyler's Birthday Backpacking Trip Part 1 and 2

Every year, for their birthdays, I take each of my children on a backpacking trip, just the two of us. They love it, and so do I. I posted a couple videos about my daughter's trip last summer, and now it's Tyler's turn. He wanted to go on the same route his sister did, so he could see the same sights that were in her videos. It's really a great route and is short enough to allow lots of exploring during an overnight trip, and not have to rush any hiking.

We parked at Gray's Arch trailhead, hiked down to the Rough Trail, and followed that to Gray's Arch and then on around to Pinch-em-tight trail, checking out the clifflines and rock shelters along the way. We took Pinch-em-tight to Tunnel Ridge Road and hiked that the short distance back to the car. We got rained on overnight, but stayed high and dry until we started back on Pinch-em-tight. Then, we got royally drenched. The rain was heavy enough I could not see the adjacent ridges, and the trail filled to several inches deep, running in rapids. A few thunderclaps made it pretty scary for Tyler, but he kept bravely going. Just as the rain let up a bit we made it back to the car and dry clothes, then went for burgers. Neither of us wanted to leave.

I can't fully express how awesome it is to spend that much quality time with one of your children. You can connect and share like you can't at home. My kids would agree with that. For now, they still look forward to these trips. Hopefully they will still want to do them in 10 years.

    Hope you enjoy the videos!

"I fish because I love to; because I love the environs where trout are found, which are invariably beautiful... because, in a world where most men seem to spend their lives doing things they hate, my fishing is at once an endless source of delight and an act of small rebellion; because trout do not lie or cheat and cannot be bought or bribed or impressed by power, but respond only to quietude and humility and endless patience...." --Robert Traver

Nice report, Scott. It sure looks like you both had a good time. Hopefully Tyler will want to continue the tradition for a long time. With the additional good time he had at the RRG hang, it might be tough for you to get out without him!

I was impressed with how well both the kids hiked into the gorge on the RRG hang. Keep up the good parenting!

(Waiting patiently for you RRG video. )

I was tickled to see this earlier on your YouTube Channel ... good stuff and a fine looking lad. Can't wait to see part two!

WARNING: Will discuss Rhurbarb Strawberry Pie and Livermush at random.

Take heart - I started my son & daughter camping at less than a year and backpacking around nine. They are 14 and 15 now and still go, just less often. My son just "graduated" from 8th grade and often is embarrassed by Dad (and/or Mom). But he wants to go on a "roadtrip", with just me, from New Jersey to Colorado to climb Mt. Sopris north of Aspen. He wants to go while there is snow on the mountain. Seems he's not so interested in getting ready for a single night out but is willing to drive 2000 miles each way (or ride is a better description...) to climb a "big mountain". At least he still wants to go. I hope Tyler and Maddie continue to love time in the outdoors with Dad.

    That's just too cool.
    Looks like a great time.
