    Gate up or gate down?

    Maybe this has been covered.
    Maybe it doesn't matter.

    But I find myself wondering . . . . .

When you throw your strap around the tree and go to clip the carabiner back onto the strap . . . do you attach it gate UP? or gate DOWN?

Youngblood told me last year at the Hot Springs Hang that the gate should always be down. Don't remember why, I just do what I'm told.

probably because you want the forces on the back spline of the carabiner rather than the gate itself if gravity should cause it to slip.

I'm suffering from smoke inhalation. We had about 10 firetrucks at my office building this morning (evacuated) and like 50 men in uniform (Shadowmoss, you would have been beside yourself ) running around with axes.

I'm in "do what your told" mode right now....it'll pass.

Even so, Youngblood is a pretty smart fella. Unless he tells me to drink Coors Light (), I'll probably listen to him.

As long as your line/webbing is taut it doesnt really matter (IMO). If for some reason the line goes slack and the gate happens to be facing up there is slight chance the line could get caught in the gate creating a problem. "D" biners automatically force the line closer the spine and farther away from the gate making them a better choice.

Right now, my set up has the head end gate up, the foot end gate down. I had to go look. I think that it dosn't matter, at least to me it hasn't yet. I may go to ground someday because of it, oh well.

Gate up. The downward force of the strap leading to the hammock is on the solid side of the 'biner. Safer but heavier (or if rock climbing) would be to double 'biner it with one up and one down.
