Though I try to keep it in the 4 to 5 hour range, I will drive 7 to 12 hours on occasion. Like you, I use night hiking to extend my trail time. I'd say I've night-hiked on 40% of my trips this year.

Now if I could only stop getting lost at night.

I have one hiking buddy who won't go hiking anywhere that is further than 2.5 hours from his house, and refuses to night hike under any circumstance. I just don't understand that type of rigidity. Who said getting out into the piney woods had to be convenient?

My friend also refuses to hike more than 7.5 miles in a day, even though he's in pretty good shape. He thinks nothing about going on a 100-mile bike ride, but won't hike more than 7.5 miles.

Part of his reasoning is that he enjoys camping and bushcraft more than hiking. He carves things, starts fire without matches, and is content to do that for hours on end. I get bored with that stuff. Heck, I've gotten to the point where I hardly ever make a fire. After a long hike, the last thing I want to do is gather wood.

And part of my friend's unwillingness to hike more than 7.5 miles might be the 60 lb. pack he typically carries. He's the kind of guy that brings a spare set of raingear.

You know I've been thinking about the drive time lately. I've done a lot of weekend trips this year and have been very lucky. But the driving is getting to me. On average I drive about 3.5 to 4 hours one way. I'm sure if I had someone to drive with me I wouldn't mind it so much. Most of the time though it's just me and the dog. I'd say less than six hours would be the most I'd drive for a weekend trip. I haven't driven anywhere in the last month and am getting antsy about more outdoors time. I hoping to change my attitude by this winter so I can spend more time on the snow.

I'm fortunate to be within 2 hours of lots of camping options. Catskills, Harriman and AT to the north, Pine Barrens to the south, and PA and AT to the west.
Of course, gatherings get special consideration.

Don,t mind setting up at night, but never cared for night hiking. For me,distance/time isn't as important as having time to enjoy the location once I arrive.I simply do not like a "hurried trip". But thats just me. These days-3 to 4 hrs each way for 3 days in the woods, and for me thats almost too fast.

I have driven 8 or more hours before but I usually try to keep it to 2-3 hrs

For me it's simple...I live on an island(currently) so anywhere I wanna go is within an hour, including traffic on a BAD day. The only downside is the price of gas here, but a one way trip from one side to the other lengthwise barely puts a dent in my tank or wallet.

Ps I think everyone should experience a tropical island atleast once in their life. Happy hangin all!

My rule of thumb is that the amount of time spent at the destination has to at least equal (and preferably exceed) the amount of travel time to and from.

Unless the vehicle is a bicycle.

About 4 hours is the limit for me if it's only a weekend. I have never liked driving anyway. Living in the southern end of Florida, everywhere is a long ways away. That 4 hours won't even get me to north Florida.
