    My first hammock

I started with 3 yards of ripstop nylon from Walmart. But my hemming took 4 inches of the length, and I'm 6'1". If it's too small for me I'll give it to my 4 y/o son.

Here are a couple of pics. One of it all hemmed up, and the other the ends gathered. I'm hoping to get some webbing this weekend and find a local source for cinch buckles. Any idea what kind of store to start with?

While I'm at it, here is a set of ranger beads I made today.

Looks like you did a good job. I'm 6'0" tall and I think that will be a little bit on the short side. As for cinch buckles, I'm fairly sure one of the vendors on this site sell some. You might try www.dutchwaregear.com. Dutch is a member of this sight and has created some pretty cool gear to hang a hammock with.

Thanks Thom. I plan to try it out, I hope it's not to small, I'm really looking forward to using it.

Are ladder locks strong enough for suspension?

My first hammock was very similar to yours. At 5'2", I found it was too small for me. I tried to get comfortable in it, and I just couldn't. I eventually made an 11' tablecloth hammock and it was a world of difference. I still have my very first hammock and will probably give it to my 7 year old nephew who loves to camp. Welcome to hammocking!!!

None of the plastic components belong in the suspension. If you do try them, please video the test hang for our amusement.

Get poly webbing. West Marine is a good source.

Home Depot - 400# (or larger)tie downs. Mine have been up a few months in the backyard and hold my 280lbs just fine. Ask the Associate in hardware to cut off the hook end for you with the chain cutter and you have instant tree huggers.

Start over with more fabric. Your 4 year old will love his or her new hammock. I made a 9 foot hammock for my son, and he's already outgrown it. I bring it with us to the playground and "hang out" in it while he plays, tho
