    Tarp + bugnet Idea

Has anyone attached a bug net to a tarp? One thing that "bugs" me about bug nets is your gear is stored out of them. What if you sewed a bug net around the edges of your tarp. Left them long so when your tarp is hung the netting hit the ground. This would create a bug free zone under your entire tarped in area. Granted this would not be the lightest of options, however might be nice. Thoughts?

Interesting idea. You'd need to pitch your tarp the same angle every time, wouldn't you? And would you stake the edges down, so that they wouldn't blow around in a breeze?

A pal made one for a DD 3x3m tarp and used poles at the corners to keep a consistent height ....

He was sleeping in a cot bed so made the most of the room with a flat pitch, should be easy enough to adapt for hanging though. Looking at his picture you could lose a lot of that netting for a conventional hammock/tarp setup

If you made the netting slightly longer (increesed bulk I know) you would have a range of options for the pitch of the tarp. But as you pointed out the wind... Hmmm... Rocks or sticks to weigh it down? I think this idea has some potential but needs some trial and error.. My thought was to creat away to keep everything under your hammock bug free and be able to access your gear, but perhaps that is asking to much, Maybe just have the netting sewing in the tarp and go under your hammock? Again no bulk or weight savings, but you wouldnt get that "inclosed" feeling you get when your in your bug net..

I have a floorless pyramid tent that uses this concept.

Go about 22 secs into this video.

Some people used Velcro so they could remove it when not needed.

There's one made called the sky tent by hammock bliss. Someone made a review about it but I don't remember who it was.

I think SGT Rock did one. Try searching for Bug Hut.

Yes i did find his, but it is a stand alone "bug hut" link. What i was wondering about is if anyone has attached bug netting around the bottom of their tarp? It seems like it would be less material and maybe less weight than the "bug hut".

ps. my go-to tarp is my superfly

+1 on the Hammock Bliss Sky Tent, that seems to be exactly what you're looking for. Google/Youtube it and have fun

Mountain Laurel Designs Duo-Mid came to mind

Go here and scroll to the options and you'll see a perimeter bug net for $45.
My duo-mid has it...it extends down 10 inches from tarp to ground and allows airflow coming up and under and into and then out the vent yet keeps the bugs out.
I think TallPaul was thinking the same thing.
No reason why this could not work with a hammock tarp especially if the tarp has doors BUT most tarpers hang their tarps higher than 10 inches, at least the tarpers I've watched set up---then you get into increasing amounts of netting and bulk as the OP stated, which equals more weight.

Last 2 seasons I've been good hosing my house and most other kit with permethryn designed for gear to create a no-fly zone for critters.....but I've not used a tarp for a while either
