Is this a boy scout merit badge? I am advancement chair....did I miss one?
Have your boys sewn their own hammocks/tarps. I worry about the cost and would love to help keep the cost down!

This is Great!. My boy just crossed over to Boy scouts and we went on a 3 day 2 night trip for the first time with our new Pack, oops I mean Troop. See fresh out of Cub scouts. I hung my BB with Mambajamba Tarp, 3 season yeti UQ and Mamba winter TQ in-between two tree. When I turned around I had an audience with mouths opened staring at me. My 11 yr. old spoke up and said." that's my dad. He sleeps in a hammock" I swear, all 15 boys including troop leaders at the same time said. COOL! they all took a turn at a walk around. I don't think any of them have ever seen such a thing. The next morning when the Troop leader crawled out of his on the ground tent and made his way over to me. I was still hanging in my BB enjoying a fresh press cup of coffee from my Jetboil and he said. You are going to show me everything about this system. lol I knew right then I had opened a can of goodness for our Troop. Can I use this info and try to start a Hammock merit badge course for my boys Troop?
P.S Keep up the great work you are doing with our youth!!!!

Fret not, you did not miss an update or training session. It's an unofficial merit badge.
WLMiller got the ball rolling with a set of requirements modeled after the standard Camping merit badge and took orders for a group buy of merit badges. Each troop has their own way of completing the merit badge. In our troop, I scrounged around for bargains on bulk purchases and had some materials donated. I was very fortunate to encounter a scout supporter who loved the idea of this merit badge. We had a "lab fee" of $25 per boy for partial (about 70% actual cost) reimbursement to the troop for expenses with the understanding that no boy would be presented the merit badge nor get to keep the gear unless the lab fee was paid. This seems to have increased the level of "buy in" on the boys part because they really take great care of the gear they not only made but paid for. Without a fund raiser or a substantial donor the cost could be tough to overcome but then again you can modify which gear you choose to make.
It's been a great experience for the entire troop and it's reduced our need for tents by over 50%.
Happy Trails to one and all.

Thanks for the info! Great activity even if it isn't official! Darn cute badge also!
Love the idea of this. Shared this with a few adult hangers in my troop. We're going to see if this is something our older scouts, who have just gotten into hammock camping, would be interested in pursuing.
