This is the start of my new Apex 5oz hopefully 30 degree top quilt. Dimensions are roughly 84"x60" before sewing.
Need to get some new needels for the sewing machine.

Fry: "I can't swallow that!"
Farnsworth: "Well then, good news! It's a suppository."
Alright its all finished. Took a while. It's about 75"x56" rectangle (no taper) weighs in at 27.7oz or 785g.
It is amazing how many mistakes a camera can hide. This was more difficult then I thought it would be. Nylon is pretty slick stuff and the Climashield likes to slide around while sewing. But already thinking about round 2.
I have a couple of questions.
Currently the insulation is only sewn on the top edge and I have a few quilt loops along the bottom edge. Should the single layer of Apex 5oz be stabilized more than that? Maybe something along each edge?
I'm using Paracord as the drawcord at the moment because that's what I had laying around. Would it actually be worth changing it to something else? Also I have 2 cord locks but I probably only need one.
Anything else I have missed or need to look out for?

looks nice, waiting for field reports! ;-)
I would put quilting loops every foot or so. As much as anything it will reduce stress when you stuff/unstuff it.
Thanks nothermark. It might be a little while before I get test this in the field but I'll definitely report back once I do get the chance to use it. I can say this its very warm on the couch in a 65 deg room.
Good thoughts. I might just do that. The Climashield does seem to slide around a little inside the shell and that might help with that. I don't plan on stuffing it much. I just jam fluffy things in the bottom of my pack in a compactor bag.

Good job cuz
As a wise man once said "If woman don't find you handsome at least they'll find you handy." Hang in there.
Hey, any update on how the quilt performed? I am considering doing this same thing and 5oz Apex.
-Jon-
Yeah I should have done this a long time ago huh?
The quilt has preformed quite well so far. I only used a single layer of Apex and I feel that 35 is my comfort limit with it. I could go a little colder but it would be a chilly night without additional clothing.
With additional clothing who knows.
But as always YMMV.
I would love to hear about your quite when you make it.

I'm thinking about doing the same thing. I found thru-hiker for the Apex 5.0, but what did you use for the covering? Sil nylon? I want to keep cost down, or I may as well pay the extra $80 for a down flight jacket from underground quilts... I'm looking at 3 yards of 5.0 ($16/y) and 5 yards of Sil Nylon ($12/y) for a 56 x 80 top quilt, and then have enough left over for a pillow. That's about $120...
Did you end up sewing any quilting loops? My KAQ New River from AH is only sewn around the edges, and that seems to be just fine.
Also, about how small does it compress?
