Where is your current military surplus store in Flagstaff?
The one I used on 89 towards the northeast edge of town is out of business.

dejoha,
what do you think of adding the PE foam as the insulation layer. Couple free PE with a cheap PL could give you a low cost UQ.
I need to find my local surplus store. One I visited did not have any.
thanks cutter
I added a layer of Insultex (basically a thin PE foam with 2 layers of scrim quilted to it) in between the layers. It definintely made a difference, but I think the PE foam would work better as an outside layer. It would trap moisture, though, so high-humidiy trips could suffer condensation as a result. From what I've read, most winter campers don't see condensation issues with Insultex or other vapor barriers due to the extreme low humidity... but I could be wrong.
The other thing I did with my PLUQ (the non-sewn variety) is make it with a differential cut: the outer layer is 1" longer than the inner. This ensures the little insulation you have isn't compressed, and a small air-gap should improve the insulation value. So far, it has worked well for my son down into the mid-40's, though I'd bet with him we could go lower... he's a human space-heater.

I finally picked up a couple of poncho liners. I want to turn one of them into an UQ. I wasn't going to add insulation because I don't really want to add any bulk. Then I got to wondering, would it do any good to sew a space blanket into it? Or would that just cause too much condensation?
Any thoughts?
dejoha- awesome as always! and I just found a poncho liner in the attic.
I made one PLUQ with PE foam and it seems to work well. You might want to try the instructions rjcress gave out on his IX DIY quilt to cut the PE to fit well.
I made a space blanket UQ at one time and put it on the inner layer, so condensation/moisture wouldn't get into the quilt, since the space blanket acts as a VBL. When sealed correctly, it seemed to work well. It was a bit tough to pack up since the mylar doesn't stuff well, so eventually I gave up on the idea.
Thanks! I wish I had an attic, especially if it had priceless antiques hidden inside, or a huge box of poncho liners

Being totally new to hanging (just ordered my first one) I want to thank you for this... I knew that I wanted to us my poncho liners as UQ and TQ but wasn't sure how to hang one under my hammock. Since I only plan on using the hammock during the hotter months here in Missouri I think this will be perfect.
THANK YOU...! Ski
Dejoha - as always - fantastic and awesome! I have now started to look forward to these illustrations as much as for the next Shug video!

Looks like I'm going to have to make myself one of these in the next week or two. Even found an army/navy store more or less on the way home from work that has new black PLs (hey, most of my hammock is charcoal gray, camo or OD would just look weird).
dejoha, it looks like you sewed 3 pleats into each end, can you tell me how wide the golds were? Also, Would there be some benefit to sewing in a channel of grossgrain on the folded side to allow more 'forward/back' adjustment beneath the hammock?
Thanks,
Steve D
