I'm thinking that, whatever animal it was, when you came out of your hammock, not only was it surprised, but it also didn't know what the heck you were.

Could you tell how high above the ground the eyes were? A Bobcat would not stand very tall, not as tall as a grown coyote or domestic dog.

Air horn sounds good. Pepper spray could come in very handy for all sorts of threats. Though I would never use it until I was pretty sure the attack was on. At least because the wind might get it on me or my sleep gear. But if not worried about that, it might make good training for an aggressive animal that has lost it's fear of humans.

But if dealing with rabies, avoid getting bit!

Hey Sarahgirl...you better escape to the AT sooner than later where you'll be safe and sound.

Seriously, that must have really been scary!!

Headlamps and pocket knives are great, but discussions like these always make me wonder whether we should all be carrying an extremely bright pocket "tactical" flashlight and either a decent sized fixed blade knife or small handgun. I've usually got the fixed blade, and have been thinking long and hard about the other two. I haven't carried a gun since I was in my late teens hunting, but I've gotten lucky and not run into any dangerous situations on the trail.

I've got one of these and I LOVE IT! Haven't used it on any wild animals yet, but the dog doesn't like it one little bit.

As others mentioned my guess is that it was a dog or coyote as well. Air horn or pepper spray would be good first options.

Sarahgirl - what you need to do is get either a Daschhund or a Chihuahua.

They simply cannot be beat for guard dogs.

    Really.

Look at the links if you don't believe it.
