HH, SS, Top cover

The HH top cover is untreated nylon. It might be ripstop, I don't remember but I know it is untreated. I made a DIY top cover using the asym bugnet as a pattern. Works very nicely and is super easy to make. Just cut the top cover several inches larger than the bugnet. Then when you hem the edges you will still have good coverage.

I would just go for 1.1oz breathable ripstop. Maybe a DWR coating, but that's as water resistant as I'd be comfortable going.

Untreated ripstop, with a 10" hole above head.

HH makes big noise about the hole being an air circulation device so fresh air is "pumped" in whenever the occupant moves. I left the hole off mine and find the fit is so loose that there is virtually no way of stale air building up in the space. I suspect the hole is more marketing hype than essential design element. YMMV

Could someone enlighten me? What is the point of a top cover? Isn't it serving the same purpose as a tarp?

The top cover provides an extra barrier against heat loss during cold weather. It actually keeps the hammock interior several degrees warmer than outside. I like mine and use it from late fall through late spring.

Use a ponch but just leave it short of the head end tuck the sides into the super shelter undercover.

If you look for the thread on the DIY HH, by HC4U, he deals with how to measure to get the shape etc to build either a top cover or bug net. I used it to cut out the bug netting, and it fit well.

Here is my first DIY project,,,, for my Expidition. The bottom is made out of 2 dri duck ponchos and the top is just one poncho with some velcro and toggles.

Here are some pictures of my OC made using measurements from a friends HH stock OC.

It has a layer of 1/4" poly batting. Since the overcover is not curved, it is easy to copy and sew. Since I work in a shop, I made a cardboard template to cut the fabric. It is cut 3" wider than the origonal, but, if I did it again, I would make it 6" wider.
Sorry for the orange, but, orange is much easier to find in the dark. It adds a lot of warmth, and, not a prohibitive amount of bulk or weight. It seems to allieviate condensation, but, I have not used it in very cold/humid conditions. I can post a image of the cardboard template with measurements on it if anyone wants to use it.
