With all due respect, I disagree about the benefits of a like button. Going by what I've observed on another forum, the thanks/like button not only does not add to the conversation, it seems to create a culture of a mutual admiration society. People start using the thanks button like a machine gun, because they feel that their status in the community is higher if their statistics reflect that they thank and were thanked x number of times. Seriously, I've seen a thread start, and then a bunch of people will respond with short positive comments (or copy the OP including 5 photos and then follow it with,"Great job, bro!") AND THEN, everybody thanks each other. IMHO this does not add to the conversation, it detracts from it.

Not that I have feel strongly about this subject.

I agree pedro that keeping track of how many likes you give or get is, as far as I can tell, useless. Its also hard to deny that thread after thread here is little more than a long series of "atta boy's" and I'm as guilty as the next regarding that. But as you say " Not that I have feel strongly about this subject". I think its clear at this point how I feel about it, life will go on without a like button, so I'll shut up now
(Stepping off his soap box, he waves to the crowd and says "thanks for your time" )

No LIKE for me. Although I do enjoy the civility and mutual admiration feel of this place.

I think those LIKE buttons are like "Comments" forms in life.....folks will look for the bad stuff to put in. Good feedback and all.

I think having a "like" button would make this forum have less communication. For example, if someone posts some pictures of the new tarp they just made. Instead of people replying, "That's awesome" or "Great job, you made a cool tarp" we're just going to have dozens of "likes." I think it makes it more personally without a like button.

I like your comment and I like your new avatar, most importantly I like you, Shug.

I think it is nice to say I like what you said, but like AS said it doesn't add to the conversation. We would be just scrolling though "I like that" posts. You would get notifications on threads that someone likes something. However the OP suggestion has a "feel good" theme and is a nice gesture it ultimately would make it easier to have blocks of non-information to scroll through. "+1" does the same thing. Also if someone did want to say they like what a person said, it is just a few keystrokes away.

I agree or should I say LIKE what Dutch and Fronkey said...although convenient, it's much more personal if somebody takes those extra few seconds to type something...even if all they say is "like" or "+1".

I think we should leave the "LIKE" button to Facebook....

    After trying it a few times . . .

    . . . then reading your "communication" reasonings for not liking a like button . . .

I conclude that although I did like what I buttoned,
    I feel somewhat younger . . . like 14 . . .

    and I don't like that . . .
    as I feel generaly . . . I don't like how they don't communicate so well.

So I do like a like button for it's quick responce ability . . .
But it is only one word . . . It doesn't even say who likes

But there is a thumb so maybe it realy means "like hitch-hiking"
which happens on the hi-way and not on a trail . . .
    . . . unless of course some one is passing by with a Travios . . .

I enjoy this Forum just the way it is. The HF community we have here is appealing because We Do communicate amongst ourselves and share our ideas. Not just a clickety gesture.

I'll use a +1 or the thumbs-up icon for a reply to a message if I also have something else to contribute to the discussion. Sometimes I don't have anything to add but still want to express thanks or approval, so I send a PM saying, "I like what you said."

As an aside, I like the fact that I can edit posts that I quote to select what I'm responding to. (I also admit to correcting people's grammar and spelling.)

We have plenty of tools for expressing ourselves here, and plenty of ideas to drive them.
