    hiking pole mods

Here is a photo of my survival bamboo handle stick. An easy mod I made to a walmart special. two poles, maybe $15? Bought a bambo tiki torch from lowes. I used the foot from one pole to make the stopper on the handle. I also put the mini compass into the stopper bottom.

Anyone made the three section staff camping chair yet?

Nice mod. I mostly use my poles to hole my tarp up to create a porch. I have built a crude version of a bushcraft chair. Once the thread injector is tuned up, I plan on putting a double layer, ripstop number together. The reason for the double layer is the ability to insulate it for those cooler days. I wish I had pics of my first one. It worked great...except the screwdriver I had in my back pocket hated the chair and poked a hole in it. I was shortly on my backside. Live and learn!

This is very interesting. I've been mulling the pros and cons of carrying poles recently. I see how they're useful sometimes, but mostly they just seem to get in my way. Worse, the light ones are crazy expensive, and the cheap ones are crazy heavy.

My biggest practical beef though is that the rubber grips are just miserable. In hot weather they get all slimy and just...bleh. This might be a real option though if I opt to carry a couple. Did you have any trouble with the bamboo splintering while you worked on it?

one bottle has; fishing line, two hooks, two sinkers, needle, and an exacto blade. The other is full of cotton coated with vasaline and a flint (easiest trick for fire starting that I've found). The handle is wraped in a coated catfish twine. At the base of the handle I wraped a couple of feet of black duct tape.

?? The actual bottles/tubes are from hobby lobby (bead section). The bamboo handle is hollow. There is room for more stuff. Storage capacity depends on the size of the bamboo. I used two sections. one to fit the end of the stick. The other for Rambo storage. Over all I think it added maybe 6" to the stick and reduced the weight after i removed the original grip. The main reason I carry it is to do the two point tie out to lift my tarp. The mod was just fun and asthetically pleasing

nah! just use your best judgement to match the diameter of the bamboo to the end of your pole. The stopper can be anything. I first used a little cork stopper from hobby lobby. I only use one staff for hiking and I was bored one day so I canabalized the other one for the rubber foot. Popped the compass off the handle and suffed it in the stopper (which also has space for maybe water purification pills)
