    Aerogel

I did not whether to put this under top insulation, bottom insulation, pads or whatever; but I did find this link

It has a clo value of 11.6, retains 97% of its insulation when compressed under 15 psi.

The site reminds me of Insultex (which I was researching when I found this) but with more insulation. It has applications in footbeds, outwear and sleeping pads.

I just thought I'd see if anyone has seen this in person or has any more information on it.

Thanks. Those articles make it sound like something with all the benefits of helium....encased in powdery lead shell costing somewhat less than a space shuttle mission.

Haha - it's still a bit spendy, no? Not sure it'll live up to the hype, but who knows? Insultex seems to be doing well and much less cost.

Influenced by one of those earlier threads, I decided to get some of the aerogel insoles (looking forward to Mt. Rogers). They were available at one place at a semi-reasonable price, but with outrageous shipping cost, so I bought 4 sets. (There was some question about how durable they are.) Wisenber, do you want to try a pair?

The answer is "probably" at the moment. Once the temps dip below 90°, I might be thinking more of foot insulators. The website actually had an ultra-marathon runner using aerogel shoe inserts in the Mohave Desert, so apparently it also reduces heat and would have to be more durable than just for a camp shoe.

I think Medicineman was looking to do some bike touring your way this Fall. If i tag along, I might get a look at them. If not, we could always resort to USPS.

They're yours any time you want them. By way of compensation you could help me with a nighttime stream crossing in the dead of winter or get up in the night and brush snow off my tarp. Oops - forgot! You already did that!
